Pick Three: Writing Prompts & Silly Stories
Hey All!
I have a fantastic writing practice “game” for you! A friend and I have been doing lots of writing prompts and practice lately to get our creative juices flowing and I just had to share this one with you.
It’s excellent prep for #NaNoWriMo and really, just getting your mind thinking in different ways. Let me know what you think of the story!
Here we go!
Rules:
Writers take tiny pieces of paper and write several prompts in three categories, keeping them separate and folding them up when done. Prompt categories are:
1) Protagonist / “Hero”
2) Plot Focus (the action of the story)
3) Antagonist / “Bad Guy”
Then, each writer draws one piece of paper out of a bowl / hat / etc. from each category, and writes a mini-story from the prompts.
Time Limit: 15 minutes
Prompts Drawn:
Protagonist / “Hero”: A silly king
Plot Focus: The storybook was magical, it held all their stories!
Antagonist / “Bad Guy”: A forgotten crayon
“The King and His Crayon”
Once upon a time, there was a silly king. A very silly king indeed. He wore trousers on his head and made his entire court start the day with the Macarena. They hated it.
But, there was no real hatred towards the king himself… that is, until it came to little Olvidaro, the forgotten crayon.
Olvidaro lived under the king’s bed, behind the slippers, two dust bunnies, and a forgotten apple. His prospects weren’t good. Not to mention the king’s bed was half a mile wide, making it nearly impossible to navigate. Frankly speaking, once under the bed, one was forever lost and forgotten.
The little crayon blamed the king for his current predicament because he was so silly. If he hadn’t been so silly, perhaps Olvidaro could be living his dream; recording the day’s adventures in the kingdom’s magical storybook.
Every day, right before the kingdom went to sleep, the king would assign an enchanted writing utensil to record the day’s events, dictated by the townspeople themselves. The little crayon longed so dearly to see the book and to create each day’s beautiful, moving pictures, which were read quarterly at a story time in the town’s square.
The crayon resented the king so much that he had gathered up an army of forgotten things, right up under the king’s bed. The army had taken years to create, and some of the “Forgottens” had been a little less than willing to join, particularly those more new, such as the pointy-toed heels, which were certain they would outlast a change in fashion trend and would soon be searched for by the king himself. But, the little crayon found ways of convincing the shoes.
Today was the day they marched… the day they took back their rightful place as “Remembereds” and rewrote history, adding themselves to the pages of the magical storybook…
Fun Facts:
Olivdar means “to forget” in Spanish
Trousers vs pants: If you want your story to be more widely understood in context for multiple countries / etc., make sure to research the meaning of words. For example, the word pants in the UK typically means “underwear”, while trousers (UK) is the word that most US citizens know to mean as “pants”. English is confusing.

Hope you enjoyed reading this silly story and are inspired to try the game yourself!
